Week 2 - Task 1 - Creative Writing: character, setting and plot
This is my choice of pictures:
And this is my story-starter:
Mayra was looking at the almost empty street. Going back to her world would not be easy. She had to find the portal which would lead her back home. She would later decide how to access it without being found by Doro, its evil custodian, who was trying to keep her out of her reign.
Many thanks to Marie-Hélène and Barbara for expanding it on Entri.
I have started to expand Vicky's with Mixedink but later I also tried GoogleDocs.
Week 2 - Task 2 - Creative Writing Tools Review
The Story Kitchen - An interesting tool that allows students to work on a story already written and finish it. Even if some language structures can be difficult for some of my students, I could use one of these stories in class and then ask the students, divided in groups, to propose alternative endings.
Bitstrip for schools - I think using cartoons is always fun. I am currently trying to introduce cartoons in my classes with Toondoo but my students haven't tried yet. I would like them to try using cartoons to revise functions (eg.: asking for and giving directions, ordering food at a restaurant, etc.). Each of them could draw his/her own avatar and use it every time they write about themselves.
The main disadvantage of Bitstrip is that it is not free.
Storybird - I have recently used a class account for a collaborative writing project with one of my classes. I was able to manage the students' accounts and see when they had worked on their assignment. The students could take turns in writing the story. The only problem I found is that the free version doesn't allow the teacher to see his/her students' stories before they are published and once the story is published you can no longer modify it. This is one of the stories produced by a group of 12-year-old students.
